Education

September 1947 – May 1950 Completed Grades 1-3 at Climax Elementary School next to our farm, 3 miles west of Bowen, Illinois. 

September 1950 – May 1955 Completed Grades 4-8 at Bowen Elementary School. I rode the bus for one hour to school. Graduated from 8th grade on May 20, 1955. 

September1955 – May 1959 Completed Grades 9-12 at Bowen High School. My graduating class had 20 students.  

September 1959 – June 1963 Completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics and German at Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. Graduated on 6-3-63. 

September 1966 – June 1967 Completed Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. My degree was funded by the National Science Foundation. The success of the Soviet Union in launching Sputnik into outer space in October 1957 inspired the U. S. Congress to fund graduate work for teachers in mathematics and sciences. 

September 1967 – August 1971 Took Classes toward earning my Ph. D. in Mathematics Education at the University of Alabama. Graduated on August 15, 1971.  

Honorary Doctor of Science from Knox College, 6-3-1995 to recognize my work as a college president. 

Honorary Doctor of Science from the Southern College of Optometry, June 2003, after serving on the Board of Trustees from 1995 until 2003.
